It may come as no surprise to you our readers/viewers/listeners that due to to editing, rendering my Ben Grimm-like mug and Spencer just needing a personal life (not to mention taping, editing and posting his own movie podcast) that there is usually about a week lag between when we tape an episode and when its released.

Why just looking at the top of this page episode 50 was released last week but yesterday we taped episode #52; thats right 52 episodes of a podcast that started out with Spencer saying to me, “Hey do you want to do a comic book podcast” and me saying “Spencer, why are you breathily whispering that into my ear, and why are you in my bedroom at 3am?”

But after the restraining order situation was rectified we sat down and started planning what eventually would become this here podcast/blog/budding  C.F.Kane-esque empire that you all seem to be enjoying.

Since those early days of planning during  games of Super-Bomberman through our most recent taping I have learned a few things-

1.I have an uncanny ability to not remember the simplest word at the appropriate time; “uh…you know Greg….that guy, with the red cape, came from Krypton…jesus, whats his name…”

2.No matter how early we say we’re going to start taping, it will *always* take us at least a half hour to stop talking about comics off camera and start talking about them with the camera on.

3.Greg puts together quite a cogent argument in defense of 90s pop-stars Hanson.

4.Having an actual game plan of what we’re discussing more than 2 minutes before the camera rolls is very nice!

5.Just let Pete talk; eventually what comes out will be gold…well actually green, but still….

6.Interviewing is a skill that is harder than Sally Jesse Raphael made it look.

6a.Everyone else on the show must have taken lessons from Sally Jesse because you all make it look easy too.

7.We are all surprisingly diplomatic about what we really think about some books.  Ask Jason what he *really* thinks about Youngblood sometime.

8.I miss having Oracle on the show to tell us when we’re entirely wrong about pretty much all of our facts.

9.Starting to plan our Emerald City Comicon activities 6 months ahead of time is *not* too early.

10.Ahe could smoke you all in comic trivia.

I’m not one for being overly sentimental but let me just say thanks to a few folks-

-First of all thanks to all of the Backroom’s amazing guests.  We’ve had some awesome conversations with some amazing people in the industry this past year and for that I am amazingly grateful.

-Greg, Pete, Jason & Ahe, you have turned the show from me ranting about ‘New-look Archie’ into discussions that are interesting, engaging and thought provoking.

-Spencer. Without you there would be no show.  Not only do our viewers probably have no idea how much work you’ve put into the show this past year but I’m not sure that even I know because you quietly just get shit done without any expectation of kudos.  Well my good friend here are a million kudos anyways (kudos have a cash value of .00000000001 cent).

-And finally to our viewers/listeners/readers.  Seeing our numbers steadily rise over the year in addition to the great feedback you give us turns from Grumpy Bear into Cheer Bear.

Here’s to the next year of podcast goodness.

So, I haven't been with the crew for all 52 episodes (issues) but in my short time with the Backroom Comics Podcast I can tell you that already I found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a princess… wait wait… that's what I learned in the Breakfast Club…

On an almost more serious note, I want to thank Kevin for his heartfelt note and extend much more gratitude than can ever possibly be expressed to the entire, ever expanding (no that is not a fat joke) Backroom Comics family. From my brief time with the 'Cast (see what I did there? 'Cast like podcast… but 'cause we also film were like a cast of characters… feeling clever over here!) I have rediscovered the love and value of the comic world as well as gotten a chance (for better or worse) to flap my yap about whatever vague stretch of the imagination I can somehow try and apply to comic book land. And much like Kevin, I love the idea of listing a few pearls of wisdom I've gleaned from this whole thing so far…

    A. In addition to his knowledge of comics, Greg has volumes upon volumes of detail specific information regarding the world of action figures/toys/whatnot. It's freakily encyclopedic really. Also, his love of digital comics is almost enough of an endorsement to get me to read them. Almost.

    2. You have to keep a close eye on Jason. He seems like a kind soul but when you're not looking… he transforms into seriously one of the filthiest and funniest fellows I know. His disdain for poorly drawn or written comics is one of the most entertaining things for me to watch… assuming it isn't a comic I love.

    D. What can you say about Spencer? For a man who has threatened on multiple occasions to replace us all with trained monkeys (and maybe the “trained” part isn't all that important to him) he never has. That has to be good right? I think if you had to narrow down his abilities to one single superpower, it would be something like “Super Patience to deal with Rambling Folk” 'cause well, we do and he does. I don't know how he does it.

3a. Kevin is absolutely right about Ahe. She KNOWS her comics. I find myself re-reading comics after she has offered her thoughts on them and constantly find myself wondering how I missed… well, a majority of the plot, subtext, and all that goes with it. I'd hate to think that happens because I am almost barely literate and just like to look at pictures but, she's starting to prove that this may very well just be the case.

IV. Which brings us to Kevin… Kevin is the heart of gold that drives this podcast crew. His unbridled enthusiasm for comics, and people, and people who read comics is seriously awe-inspiring. He even brought his mom in for us to interview and if that doesn't get filed into the category of “Bravest Dude I Know” I don't know what does. For the record, she was amazingly sweet and I am now pretty certain I am going to hell for all of those “Yo Mama…” jokes I told about her before I ever met her. What can I say? I guess I love a Yo Mama joke more than eternal salvation.

And finally, as Kevin pointed out, our viewers/readers/commenters/participators… what started out as just a handful of friends/acquaintances/ne'er-do-wells, has steadily been growing into something that feels much larger (again, not a fat joke) in a great way. I want to thank you all for taking the time to watch/read/listen/join-in/joke/whatever, that lets us know that not only are we entertaining ourselves but hopefully entertaining you somewhat too. I cannot thank you enough for this. In fact, if you send me your address I will personally drive over to your house and thank you in person. Probably around dinner time. Fyi, I like lasagna.

Indeed, I look forward to the next 52 (and beyond) where among other things, we will slowly but surely replace all of Kevins vital organs with used pinball machine parts.

    -Pete

Re: Greg and toys–seriously, he scares me. I mentioned once having an oversized Robin doll and he knew where, when, who manufactured, etc…I didn't even know that. I was like, it was a gift and YOU ARE A FREAK. The lovable kind.
