I think there is a huge flaw in your agrument, and that is, what is someone is as talented as Sim or Smith? Both of those guys had very little, if any published comic book success before starting their long stories and while both knew the ending, neither of them had a concrete script on how they were going to get there.

Smith didn’t do Bone twice, he took characters and story points from his daily college newspaper strip “Thorn,” these are no where near what Bone became, and in fact, Smith changed the setting for the ending as he began the last series.

Love this post Thomas! Before you even got to the point of the Silver Age comics I was thinking the same thing. I absolutely love going through the DC Showcases and what they lack in story length/modern comic sensibility they make up for in spades with explosions of creativity and (in the case of Robert Kahnigher and a few other) totally wonderful insanity!
