Jhonen Vasquez Does Not Like His Fans

Submitted by Christopher Hogue on May 9, 2010 – 7:32 pmView Comments

I promised myself and other people that I wouldn’t use this to bash things and people, much, but I have to put this out. Back when I was a teenager who wore all black and was full of angst with no reason why, I would go to Hot Topic and pick up a magazine called Carpe Noctem (Seize the Night). Inside was not only hot goth chicks, but early work of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. This was before he published the comics including Squee and the Nickelodeon cartoon Invader Zim. His work came across not only genre defining, but cynical, original and fresh. Fastforward a decade with several publications, and a brief hit cartoon. I finally get to meet him in person at the Emeral City ComiCon. With every other guest attending, they are more than happy to sign a generous amount of their material and converse as well. Not Jhonen. Showing up for less than 3 to 4 hours for one day, roughly, he had the volunteers walk down the lengthy line and announce his demands of signing only 2 items and to not talk to him. Impatiently waiting, my time arrived to get a signature and notice that this “great” creator of the medium wouldn’t even look me in the eye. Not any of his fans. This March at the Emerald City ComiCon, I found out he was attending again. I had the opportunity to do two things.

1) Get more autographs and see if the situation was any different.
2) Tell him to get over himself; That he’s a prick.

He did show up both days and was at his table a lot more. I even showed up several times to his table, with no line, but not only was he not signing autographs, but he was also blowing off fans, rather smug-like. I waited at his table until he left with his friend to walk around several times throughout the convention center. Does he not like Seattle? Conventions in general? Or had fame gotten to his head? Maybe it’s bitterness from the copycats like the book I LUV HALLOWEEN, etc. But until then, he should thank the fans that paid for his over-priced Hot Topic outfits that he wears in public. They love him.

It is such a bummer when an artist that you like and respect is a jerk at cons. I mean, come on, Jhonen, at least fake it a little.

There is a lot to both sides. Fans see him as a great artist who doesn't like his fans. He see's something terrible he has created. Have you read his comics? Do you see the irony in the fans he has created? Also, he makes no money off of Invader Zim merchandise. Thats all Nickelodeon.

I have no idea what you're talking about–I'm not familiar with the terrible fans he has created? Can you explain, please?

  • Klimpt

Check out the replies to anything he says on twitter, ever. People are god-awful. Insulting him and saying inane shit while completely unable to understand even the film or literature references he's making. They're all anime-obsessed “LOL RANDUM MUNKYCHEEZ” types and I wouldn't blame him for being a little tired of it. Dude deserves way, way more respect as an artist and writer. He just makes some brilliant things that unfortunately appeal to idiots.

An artist who comes all the way to a con only to blow off his fans? Smells like jerk to me, mendicant. I wasn't there in person to be so socially inept as to be unable to pick up on his sarcastic refusals to sign autographs, though, just basing my assessment on Chris' report.

  • ahe

Oh, just checked out his Twitter replies. I didn't see anything insulting, but WOW there were a lot of super lame, semi-literate posts. I would definitely react poorly to a steady stream of that in person at cons. But I'm totally an asshole, so I'm probably not the best gauge of how a normal person responds to annoying douchebaggery.

  • mendicant

He’s a really nice guy, actually, and incredibly polite. The only people who think he’s a “jerk” are the ones too socially inept to pick up on sarcasm, irony, or simple facetious banter–oh wait that’s the most vocal part of his fanbase.

  • ahe

No sympathy here. If 170-year old Stan Lee can do it without crying, so can everyone else. Here's a tip: if you can't handle signing things at conventions, don't get a table.
