New comics for 3/17/2010 (now with 100% more new comic smell)!!
Oooooooooooh man… I sooooooooooooo meant to post this up last week and because of all the prep for the ECCC I totally spaced…. which is kinda a good thing as this weeks pulls weren’t all that much anyway. So, without further ado… here’s what I gots this week…
*Criminal – The Sinners Part 5 (ICON) – Have you read aaaaaany of Brubakers Criminal series before? If you have then you know this is totally awesome and gritty stuff. Kiiiiiiller.
*Batman – Widening Gyre #5 (DC) - Well, can’t wait to see what Kevin Smith has done in this one to cause me to scratch my head and wonder what the hell I’m doing still keeping up with this one. It started off kinda good. It did. And now, I’m just not so sure anymore.
*Resurrection #9 (ONI) - So far I don’t know anyone else reading this title but, it’s pretty good. It has a certain “world is dead and we’re all screwed” feeling to it but, there’s something else there too… I wouldn’t be surprised if this eventually gets turned into a movie or tv show or web series or something. And if it does, I’m totally rubbing it in your face that I knew it all along.
*Choker #2 (IMAGE) - I want this to be Fell. I really loved Fell. This isn’t Fell though. It is really really good though. Imagine if that movie Se7en was a comic book. Would feel similar to this. Minus Gwenyth Paltrows head in a box. Well, so far anyway. Who knows what’s going to be in issue 3… (if it does show up in issue 3, I hope it isn’t scratch ‘n sniff)
*Batman & Robin #10 (DC) – More Batman, more Grant Morrison, more amazing gritty stuff… wait, I already used “gritty” as a descriptor earlier in this column… how about more “tough and brooding” stuff. Yeah, that gets the vibe across. Look, it’s good. It’s got that “real” feel that applies to the Batman world. How can you go wrong with that?
*X Factor Forever (MARVEL) - Look! A Marvel title! And an “X” title at that. You know how I keep trying to find a solid Marvel title? Well, this wasn’t it. It was clunky and confusing and really just borrowed heavily from X-Factor issues that were around like 15 years ago, only now they’re trying to cram in all those years of issues into this five issue mini series. Seriously, it’s supposed to take place after X-Factor #64. Why after #64? I. have. no. idea.
And finally, we come to the last pick…
*R13 #3 (BLACKLIST) - So here’s the thing… you know how rad the folks at R13 are? Not only do they send us advance copies of their issues but, Thomas is even kind enough to write a column for us (the ever terrific “Indy Comic Book Fail Lesson” series). Now, in effort of full disclosure of that, it seems like any preview or review of their book that we could do, would seem to be maybe a conflict of interest (what with them bribing us with amazing web content and free comic books). Here’s the problem with that though… I really really really like this book. A lot. In fact I liked it so much, I offered to do a preview of it a week or so before it came out. Only I’m not as bright sometimes as I would like to believe as when Spencer kept asking “Hey, where’s that preview?” My response was “I’m waiting on it as I want to do it right before it releases that way it’s still fresh in everyone’s mind when they go to the comic shop”. Yeah, well…. I guess I wasn’t keeping up on the release dates as well as I thought I was ’cause it’s out and I didn’t post the advance excitement in time. Ugh. My bad. Now, moving past all that, we’ve got a book about a mysterious ancient (feels old to me anyway) robot/person. Clearly there is a laaaaaarge mythology at play here and it is slowly being revealed. Plus, there are lots of ‘splosions (well what would pass for ‘splosions in comic book world). As with several other titles I give this credit to, as soon as I finish an issue, I want another one. To me that is a mark of a good series.
And as per usual, feel free to chime in with your thoughts and opinions about what you are reading… if you dare….
(Okay, just kidding about that “if you dare” part)
