On Crossovers/Events

Submitted by Kevin Malcolm on March 5, 2010 – 7:08 amView Comments

I’ve got to respect Jason for his stance on not spending any of his money on crossover events and considering the glut of them that we’ve had as comic fans recently I don’t blame him.

After dumping all Avengers and most other non-cosmic related Marvel titles I feel liberated.  I have no idea what is going on in Siege or X-men:Siege or Dark Avengers:X-men:Avengers:Fall of the Hulks:Siege and I feel no real sense of loss.  When Marvel starts printing more comics that interest me I’ll start reading them but for now Quesada & Co’s business strategy has turned me off a large portion of that universe.

However, I’m not going to go so far as to say I don’t like or support any crossovers.  I am kinda-sorta enjoying Blackest Night (Its no Final Crisis, yes I’m serious, but its a decent popcorn movie type story that I’m interested to see resolution on.) and I was a huge fan of Final Crisis, Seven Soldiers, DC One Million (oh wait, those are all Grant Morrison creations…okay how about), Infinity Gauntlet & the big grand daddy of them all, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

So I ask you gentle-readers-

1.Do you have event fatigue caused by DC & Marvel’s actions over the last 10 years or so?

2.What are some of your favorite all-time events?

There's a pretty standard equation for these events. Intergalactic bullshit + bunch of people I don't care about + (people I actually do care about/100) = some crap that's going to screw with 'verse-wide continuity. It's just a fucking trick to get you to buy another comic book because all the other books you read will reference it and I fall for it EVERY TIME. I have no strength of character. Well, actually let me say I fall for it every time in DC, Marvel can go straight to hell with their crossover events.

    1. I could seriously have killed someone over Countdown (to Final Crisis). Such. A. Waste. Of. Time. The only thing that made it slightly worthwhile was that one issue where Trickster uses his hand puppets to convince The Question that he and Piper are too stupid to be murderers. And it was 52 issues! Not including all the tie-ins! AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I am such a dumbass.

I also curse Infinite Crisis forever. Goddamn you, Superboy-Prime.

    2. I did like Crisis on Infinite Earths, I read it as a trade after the fact and I'm not sure how I would have liked it had I already been reading comics and this came along and interrupted me, you know? More recently, I actually liked 52 A LOT. And I liked a good deal of the OYL storylines. OH, and The Search for Ray Palmer Countdown tie-ins were actually pretty good elseworlds-type tales.

Ahe did I tell you I have a piece of original art from 52? Its where Mercury first reawakens and surprises Doc Magnus.
I agree on 52 AND on the awfulness of Countdown…why oh why did I read that? Did you learn your lesson by the time Trinity rolled around because I sure didn't.

NO, you did not. I must see it!

Um, no, I did not learn my lesson. Why? I NEVER learn my lesson.
