R.I.P. Harvey Pekar

Submitted by Jason Doctor on July 12, 2010 – 10:14 amView Comments

Harvey Pekar passed away last night. Were it not for the movie “American Splendor”, he’d probably still just be referenced only by fans of underground comics (and David Letterman). He was an iconoclast, even among indie comics writers, and his unique Midwestern voice offered a perspective few are able to properly translate to a wide audience. Yes, it was usually depressing, but it almost seemed as if his personality was made to properly capture the mood of life in Cleveland. It was highly amusing to watch him spar with Anthony Bourdain over food and culture, and life. I’ll leave it to his hometown paper, The Plain-Dealer, for the full and proper obituary/career retrospective.
