Reticence investing yourself in a new show?

A favorite webcomic of mine addresses what I think is an interesting issue – are science fiction/fantasy shows (BBC doesn’t count) doomed to either be cancelled too soon or take a turn for the irredeemable worse? The two examples he uses solid ones, but the first that came to mind for me is Firefly.
