Your girlfriend is (probably) not an idiot.

Submitted by Ahe Butterfield on February 27, 2010 – 7:27 pmView Comments

I try to be diplomatic when people recommend things to me, but what is this, Greg?

I do not like this article.  I especially don’t like that it was written by a woman.  Thanks for selling us out, lady.  Your girlfriend isn’t into comics, you say?  Well, fear not, for women are easily manipulated!

Look, dude, if your girlfriend does not have an interest in comics, trying to force or trick her into it is not cute, it is annoying.  Also, unless she’s stupid, she will cotton on to your game the minute you try to slip an issue of Swamp Thing into her Cosmo. And you know what?  She’s going to resent it a little.  If you’re lucky, she’ll read a couple of graphic novels just to shut you up.  And she’s probably going to complain about it to all of her friends behind your back (and maybe some of your friends too).

How about this: if it is really important that you and your girlfriend can occasionally discuss comics, TELL her.  Is that so hard?  Why all the chicanery?

Why is it that nowhere in this treatise on how to get your stupid girlfriend to read comic books is the suggestion that HEY JERK IF YOU’RE SO DESPERATE FOR HER TO READ COMICS WHY DON’T YOU THOUGHTFULLY OFFER TO SHARE IN SOME OTHER INTEREST OF HERS BECAUSE IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU. ASSHOLE.  WTF.

Ugh. So, how about it, has anyone successfully converted a significant other (female or male!) to comics?  Did you, in fact, resort to trickery and shenanigans?

If this were on Facebook, I would have clicked the “like” button on this. As for the article that dude wrote, correct me if I'm wrong but I imagine what girls like even less than being “tricked” into reading comics is having some asshat write an article about how he accomplished it and how others can to. Ladies just looooooooooooooooove to be embarrassed about things in a public forum. It shows how much you value their “words”. Way to make sure you don't see your girlfriend nekkid anymore dude.

It's even worse–a woman wrote the article. A woman who, by her own admission, has fallen prey to the tactics she describes. I'm like, girl, you are dumb and your boyfriend is a jerk.

My husband wasn't all that into comics. I told him he aught he give “Preacher” a try. And he did. And he loved it. After that, he ASKED me what books he should ready next. And boy did I have suggestions. And you know what? If he didn't like “Preacher”, it wouldn't be a big deal because we have plenty of other things to talk about. That's called a healthy relationship.

Wow, that sounds so rational and healthy!

I tried to get an ex to read James Robinson's Starman because she had read Fables/Walking Dead/Sandman (basically all the 'expected' ones) but I could never convince her she'd like it so after suggesting it twice I dropped it. My hobby doesn't need validation from someone else. I am happy to share though.

So, I will give you credit, Ahe. The article was not the one I remembered. The one I was thinking about was this one, here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article...
It is about how to make your comic shop more female friendly. And you know what, I don't think it is so much about how to make it female friendly, but really consumer friendly. Which I like. So read it. And then you can write a new article about how awful it is ;)

  • ahe

I actually read that one too–my notes on it were “not as much about getting women into the store as much as basic customer service.”

  • Greg_Upton

Totally true. And why is that so hard for people to remember that a comic shop is just that, a shop. People take the comic audience for granted at times.
