Hola, Awesome job on this episode–I am really enjoying this series + looking foreword to the next one.

One thing I really appreciate is your comments on “recurrence” in the series–you know, like “we saw this in issue #2″, or “we will see this again later”–the sections in which you guys start flipping through pages to find trying to figure out the first or next occurrence of something. I had never really noticed how often that happened in the series–and how it may relate to the actual act of dreaming. In dreams, all the characters or events seem strangely “familiar” like we have been there before (this is often seen as the emergence of the subconscious trying to work out historical events), but in Sandman part of this is structural–we have seen this all before.

The occasionally application of Joseph Campbell Hero Tale type analysis strikes me as a little forced, I like it more when you guys are geeking out arguing about the minutiae, rather then trying to track down the BIG THEMES (if you know what I mean).

Keep up the great work. Thanks, David S

    Hey David,
I’m glad you’re enjoying the series so far.
Greg is back now so we’ll be filming Vol 3 (Which I believe is Dream Country is it not?) either this week or the next.

The repetition of themes is something I love about the Sandman series because it just shows how well planned and thought out the story was from the very beginning.

If you see any themes/motifs that you think we may be missing, please don’t hesitate to point them out, I’m always happy to gain even more insight into the series.

I totally get your point re:Joseph Campbell and if my memory is correct (though it may not) I remember talking about the Heroes Journey only because I had remembered Neil Gaiman mentioning that he had definitely crafted that sort of tale for the first volume. But you’re right, there is *much* more to talk about than just that (though I reserve the right to bring it up again if it seems relevant :)

    Thanks for listening!

    Hi there!

Found your podcasts because of Peter Bagge and now randomly working myself through the rest of the episodes. I really enjoy the discussions you’re having so keep up the great work (again).

Just two comments about this episode.
First, the newer reprints of The Doll’s House does not have issue 8 in them, so new readers buying the trades doesn’t have to worry about getting it twice.

Secondly, and not really important at all. You talked a little about how most of the titles on Vertigo at the time were horror books. Well, Vertigo didn’t exist at that time. It started in 1993, the first Sandman there was #47. It’s a bit fun how Sandman sort of is seen as the quintessential Vertigo comic, but only had 29 of it’s 75 issues on Vertigo.
Yeah, not important at all and I still managed to write twice as much.

Now on to more of your podcasts!

    Hi Thomas,
You’ve caught us in a research flub for sure.
I knew that the Sandman didn’t start out as a Vertigo title but I didn’t realize that it made the transition into the line so late into the series.

Thank for checking out the rest of the podcasts! We’ll be recording Vol 4 of the Sandman hopefully this week.
